I had shared recently that I always purchase cute frames when I see them at stores or garage sales as they can be used for so many things. I had just purchased two from a clearance sale at Hobby Lobby and was putting them away when I noticed this pretty little white frame I had purchased a few months back. I thought it would go great on the mantle with the decorations I had just put up for January. In fact, when I tested it out, I thought it looked great just by itself, but it was a broken frame and the part that was broken was the easel that holds it up on the back. It was pretty thin and so I knew if I added a base of some sort it would be perfect.
As I've shared numerous times, we are currently refinishing our basement. My husband recently finished off the door that leads to the basement. If you are familiar with door jambs which I have never been, but am quickly becoming more familiar with in recent weeks, you know there is a piece of board that lines the frame to keep the door in place. Our doors in the house are white, so we have quite a few scraps of the white melamine trim. Here is a picture of what I'm talking about.
I thought this would be a perfect base for the picture frame, so asked my honey to cut me a piece just bigger than the frame. Here are the items I used for this project.
I don't know why I took a picture of the frame upside down, but you'll see how cute it is later in the final picture. You can see though where the easel is broken off and if you have good eyesight you can see the price I purchased the frame for was $3.49 which is really the biggest portion of this project. If you had to purchase a piece of melamine, I couldn't tell you what that would cost, but you could do a lot of projects with one piece. The burlap heart and flower came in a package of about 12 pieces from Hobby Lobby which I'm sure I bought 50% off, but I didn't have them in the package, so can't tell you the price. They were leftover from a Valentine's banner I made last year, but may still blog about it. And then the clips were 50% off from Hobby Lobby when they do Paper Studio products on sale. So this is a pretty inexpensive project which is very beautiful and elegant when done.
I painted the raw edges of the melamine with just Basic White craft paint.
Then I glued the frame to melamine with E6000. I love that stuff! I was so pleased with the way this look that I wanted to make it something I could use year round, so instead of permanently affixing something inside the frame, I added a little clip to the frame with the E6000. You wouldn't need to add the clip if you like it just as it is. I love the look of empty picture frames grouped together or even just one beautiful frame. In my opinion that would be good enough in the right place.
I put the burlap heart in the clip, but did try the flower as well. You could clip in a snowflake for Christmas or star for the 4th of July or even a picture. The possibilities are endless.
Here it is at home on the mantle for now. It could easily be worked into many vignettes. I also took a close-up which is just beautiful if you ask me.
Thanks for tuning in and please keep checking me out. If you have any comments or questions, please let me know. I'd love to hear from you. Thanks again and happy crafting!
