I've been feeling crafty lately as I've been getting the creative juices flowing with the new blog. It's almost hard to stop crafting and the ideas are just flowing right now. It is so fun to create beautiful things and I especially love creating beautiful things from items that would be discarded or go unused because of damage or not my taste. I shared in a previous blog about a sign I took apart that I've had for years. I just wanted to use the metal word and not the entire sign for decorating. So I just popped them apart, but it left me with this beautiful, blank wood sign.
In fact, I liked the wood sign so much, I am making a temporary craft for Valentine's, so I can use the board for a template to make more permanent crafts in the future. You all know, we are finishing our basement, so I anticipate lots of wood scraps from that venture. This was the inspiration behind a 'temporary' craft, so if needed, I could take this apart and not ruin my craft project.
As you can see, there are holes where the metal word had been attached to the sign. All I needed to do to reuse this was hide it and oh the possibilities...
So here is what I used in my project. I had this craft paper that is thicker than cardstock, but not as thick as chipboard. I also had these corkboard squares from my husband's old house, so I grabbed that as well. Then I got some ribbon, adhesive and a pair of scissors and went to town.
You could really use any medium here. Material, wood scraps, metal or metallic paper, various colors and patterns of paper to match your decor. It really is unlimited, but like I said I chose paper. I thought about the corkboard, but decided against it because I thought I'd save it for another project I'm gonna be working on soon. And the adhesive you use would depend on what medium you choose. This project is that easy.
The hard part about cutting out hearts is getting the two sides even. I still have to fold the paper in half to have a symmetrical heart. I mean, don't we all. We learned that clear back in elementary school. Anyways, I didn't want my final project to have a fold down the middle, so I just used this for a template. I used the whole sheet of 12 x 12 and my Cricut doesn't take that big a sheet. I have an older model, but you can purchase hearts or make them in your Cricut or trace them off the Internet, if you don't want to make your own. Once I had a template, I cut two hearts out and decorated them with a piece of ribbon about 10 inches long that I simply tied in a knot at the middle.
Here is an opportunity to really make this project your own with the choice of colors and patterns you use in the mediums you pick. It can match your home or be more traditional red and pink of Valentine's with bows that are plain or have prints or words, but definitely the place to let is say who you are.
I attached them to the board and tried them both horizontally and vertically. I liked it best this way where the hearts overlap each other and hang off the board a little, but went with it vertically as I wanted it to lean against the mantle and liked the height with it vertical versus horizontal. I should have taken a picture to show you the difference, but here is the finished product in it's permanent 'temporary' home.
Thanks for checking out this project. It is so simple and inexpensive, but very elegant even though it is just paper. I hope you enjoyed reading and it helps you get your creativity activated.
